Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu (5 Days)
Located northwest of Cuzco, Nevado de Salkantay, the cordillera’s tallest peak rises to 6,271 metres above sea level. The name Salkantay means ‘Savage Mountain’ and it is a strikingly beautiful single peak providing a great focal point for this route. The trek normally takes 5 days and is popular with trekkers wanting to combine a quieter, less trodden route with a visit to the Inca ruins of Machu Picchu.
One of the reasons the Salkantay trail is so popular is the incredible diversity of the views and ecosystems. Voted among the top 25 best treks in the world the walk is dominated by the 20,500-feet-high Mount Salkantay and cuts through the beautiful Mollepata Valley and passes Salkantay at an altitude above 15,000 feet before traversing around the mountains to arrive at Aguas Calientes. The trek is only a little more difficult than the Inca Trail, and horses are used to carry food and equipment.
4-Day Lares trek to Machu Picchu with optional Hot Springs
This 4-day trek allows you to spend time with local people while trekking through the amazing Andean mountains ending with a tour at Machu Picchu. This specialized route passes through two villages: Kiswarani and Cancha Cancha, where they still practice the Incan lifestyle. These visits are authentic and beautiful experiences and your guide will be at your side helping you to communicate since mainly Quechua (the language of the Inkas) is spoken here.
Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu (5 Days)
The Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu is an alternative to the Inca Trail and considered by most to be the best alternative route (and maybe even better!). This magnificent trail is perfect for adventurers who wish to become personally integrated in changing ecosystems from one day to the next. You will walk through sweeping, magical landscapes of a snowy mountain paradise to a tropical jungle where you will find a wide range of animals and medicinal plants and flower varieties. Witness with your own eyes a living, but ancient, culture in remote villages hardly ever seen by foreigners!
The Cordillera Vilcabamba is an impressive mountain range extending over 260 km,. The snow-capped mountain Salkantay rises to 6271 MASL– 20574 FASL in height. It is an outstanding snowy peak, located less than fifty miles northwest of the city of Cusco in south-central Peru. Because of its proximity to the city, it is easily accessible by car and it has been climbed by professional mountaineers since 1952.
