Truffle is an unusual subterranean fungus. There are two important varieties of truffles: white truffle (Tuber Magnatum) and black truffle (Tuber Melanosporum). Both of these can be found in the Motovun forest located in the valley of the Mirna River. Even though truffles can be found elsewhere, Motovun truffles are considered to be of the highest quality.Truffles live 10 – 30 centimetres underground, which makes it hard to find, and that’s why trained dogs are used in the truffle hunting activities. I'm a professional truffle hunter from 3 generations in Alba. My grandfather after the 2nd world war was one of the first truffle hunters, he taught my father all the secrets about the precious "ipogean fungus" then my father taught it to me. I'm a dog trainer and actually I've got 3 great dogs: Lisa, Palli & Isi. I would like to teach "some'' of my truffle hunting secrets to travelers. During the tour you will be helped by my friend Margherita. She's an official tourist guide with great passion for truffles and local culture, translating every part of the hunting.

This exclusive experience will allow you to immerse yourself in the typical Tuscan landscape, accompanied by me, an expert truffle hunter for 3 generations, and my faithful dogs. During the excursion, you will learn the ancient truffle hunting techniques passed down by my family, and you will learn more about this rare and precious ingredient, typical of Tuscan cuisine. You will walk with me and my dogs in the woods, and this is the most fascinating part of the route, where you can see my dogs in action! While we will only perceive the scent of the woods, my dogs will be able to sniff the hidden aroma of truffles, and give us this precious ingredient that you will be able to savor in the most authentic way. At the end of the Tour you will receive very fresh truffles, including those just found, and instructions on how to preserve and cook them.

Outside our farm house we meet up with our expert truffle hunter and his wonderful dogs. To help you get the best of the companionship of the truffle hunter, a mine of information on truffles, the dogs, the woods and countryside and the local area in general you will be accompanied by an English speaking interpreter – generally an interpreter who also assists in the cooking classes and so able to give you tips on storing and using the truffles in the kitchen.

After a one-hour comfortable drive from Florence to the Chianti region, you will meet with our professional truffle hunter. You will enjoy hiking through vineyards and woods, having fun hunting truffles with his trained dogs. You will discover the main features and secrets of truffles.
