Truffle is an unusual subterranean fungus. There are two important varieties of truffles: white truffle (Tuber Magnatum) and black truffle (Tuber Melanosporum). Both of these can be found in the Motovun forest located in the valley of the Mirna River. Even though truffles can be found elsewhere, Motovun truffles are considered to be of the highest quality.Truffles live 10 – 30 centimetres underground, which makes it hard to find, and that’s why trained dogs are used in the truffle hunting activities. My grandfather after the 2nd world war was one of the first truffle hunters, he taught my father all the secrets about the precious "ipogean fungus" then my father taught it to me. I'm a dog trainer and actually I've got 3 great dogs: Lisa, Palli & Isi. I would like to teach "some'' of my truffle hunting secrets to travelers. During the tour you will be helped by my friend Margherita. She's an official tourist guide with great passion for truffles and local culture, translating every part of the hunting.

All this surrounds the discovery of one of the oldest and most secret professions in Tuscany: that of the truffle hunter. Due to its underground nature, its delicacy and its enormous economic value, the truffle has always fascinated man, playing a leading role in Tuscan culture and tables. In order not to be seen and to arrive before the others, truffle hunters often go at night to look for truffles, and it is no coincidence that in the Corazzano valleys one night in 1954, the largest truffle in the world was found weighing 2520 g. During the truffle hunting experience we will travel the paths where truffles naturally grow. All the secrets about the truffle, the plants that live in symbiosis with it and dog training will be explained; and if we are lucky we will also be able to find some nice truffles

To do a truffle hunt is a unique experience for blending good food, traditions and contact with locals. It will start in the morning at a farm. From there together with a truffle hunter we will enjoy a walk in a wood with trained dog hunting the so called black diamond of Umbria, truffle. After the truffle hunt you will have a tasting with truffle, extra virgin olive oil and other umbrian products.

Truffles are a seasonal delicacy but in this area we are very lucky, in spring we can find the Marzuolo or March truffle, in summer the Tartufo Nero Scorzone, a black Summer truffle, while in winter there are black winter truffles but also sometimes the famous " Bianco delle Crete Senesi", the highly prized white truffle. Outside our farm house we meet up with our expert truffle hunter and his wonderful dogs. To help you get the best of the companionship of the truffle hunter, a mine of information on truffles, the dogs, the woods and countryside and the local area in general you will be accompanied by an English speaking interpreter – generally an interpreter who also assists in the cooking classes and so able to give you tips on storing and using the truffles in the kitchen.
